Strengthening Literacy. Expanding Possibilities
The Edison Teaching & Learning Center has been transforming literacy outcomes for students through both direct instruction and educator training since 2019. At Edison, students receive individualized or small-group instruction from certified tutors during the school day, making meaningful gains in reading skills that open doors to greater academic confidence and long-term success. Classroom educators, tutors, and parents alike can benefit from training, and become certified in the application of Orton Gillingham literacy strategies—strengthening the overall educational landscape.

Classroom Educator Course
This course is designed for classroom teachers who want to build their knowledge and confidence in Orton-Gillingham instruction. The coursework meets the requirements for the Orton-Gillingham Academy Classroom Educator Level.
Course Fee: $1,050.00
Interventionists who work primarily with small groups are encouraged to consider the Associate course, which is designed with their instructional role in mind.
Course Dates: TBD
When scheduled, the course will be offered in a hybrid format, with the option to participate online or in person at Edison High School.
Course Materials
To help you get the most out of the course, please plan to have the following materials ready:
- The Magic of Orton-Gillingham — the required course textbook. To purchase a copy, complete the order form and email it to the Oregon Dyslexia Institute.
- Basic Sound Deck — if you do not already have a complete visual and auditory drill deck, you will need the Basic Sound Deck, which will be used throughout the course.
We recommend ordering your materials as soon as possible to ensure they arrive before the course begins.
Practicum
A practicum is available for an additional fee and provides an opportunity to put your coursework into practice with support and guidance.
If you are pursuing Orton-Gillingham Academy membership at the Classroom Educator Level, completion of the practicum is required before you can apply for membership. Coursework alone does not constitute Orton-Gillingham training at the Classroom Educator Level. You will be considered trained at this level once you have completed the required practicum and your application for Academy membership has been approved.
We look forward to learning with you and supporting you as you bring structured, multisensory literacy instruction into your classroom!
Classroom Educator Practicum
For educators who would like to continue toward Orton-Gillingham Academy membership at the Classroom Educator Level, a supervised practicum is available for an additional fee of $1,000.
The practicum provides an opportunity to put your coursework into practice while receiving individualized, diagnostic and prescriptive feedback and support. It includes a minimum of 50 lessons and takes place over at least eight months, with a minimum of five consecutive months.
Throughout the practicum, an Orton-Gillingham Fellow observes the trainee teaching five complete classroom or small-group lessons, with observations distributed across the practicum period. These observations provide opportunities for guidance, feedback, and continued growth in applying the Orton-Gillingham Approach.
After successfully completing both the Classroom Educator coursework and practicum, educators may apply to the Orton-Gillingham Academy for membership at the Classroom Educator Level.
The practicum is an important opportunity to deepen your learning, strengthen your instructional practice, and receive support as you bring the Orton-Gillingham Approach into your classroom.
Associate Level Course
This course is designed for interventionists and educators who provide one-to-one or small-group instruction. It explores the brain basis of reading and the essential components of effective reading instruction for all learners, with a particular focus on dyslexia and the Orton-Gillingham Approach.
The course provides a foundation in the structure of the English language, assessment, and diagnostic and prescriptive lesson planning and instruction. Participants will also learn how to incorporate grammar and writing into Orton-Gillingham lessons. The coursework meets the requirements for the Orton-Gillingham Academy Associate Level.
Course Fee: $2,100
Course Dates: TBD
When scheduled, the course will be offered in a hybrid format, with the option to participate online or in person at Edison High School.
Prerequisites: Bachelor’s degree and completion of the OGA Subscriber Course
